Let's Take Care of the Grand Theatre in Lodz
The Grand Theatre in Lodz is beginning the implementation of the project "Adaptation and modernization of the space of the Grand Theatre in Lodz, including the purchase of equipment and furnishings" (No. FENX.07.01-IP.04-0013/24). This is another important step in caring for a building that has been a symbol of opera and ballet culture in our city for nearly 60 years.
A Stage for Great Premieres
Since January 1967, when Stanisław Moniuszko's "Halka" was first performed in the new venue at Dąbrowskiego Square, over 350 opera and ballet premieres have been staged here. This is where the world premieres of Romuald Twardowski's operas "Lord Jim" and "Maria Stuart" took place, as well as renowned productions of Krzysztof Penderecki's works "The Devils of Loudun" and "Ubu Roi."
The theatre has hosted world-class vocalists: Victoria de Los Angeles, Kiri Te Kanawa, Placido Domingo, Andrea Bocelli, and Aleksandra Kurzak. The theatre has been invited to perform at Teatro Vittorio Emanuele and the Lyon Opera. Since 1968, it has organized the international Łódź Ballet Meetings festival, which has welcomed the world's most important ballet companies – from Maurice Béjart's Ballet of the Twentieth Century to Nederlands Dans Theater.
A Building with a Rich History
The multi-story main building of the Grand Theatre was constructed between 1949 and 1964 according to the design of Witold Korski, Józef Korski, and Roman Szymborski. The building, which dominates Dąbrowskiego Square, was entered into the Register of Monuments of the Łódź Voivodeship on September 7, 1976.
Continuing the Care for Our Heritage
In 2012, the building underwent a thorough modernization – the first in over 40 years – thanks to funds from the European Fund. The current project continues this commitment to caring for this historic building. It encompasses comprehensive modernization – from the reconstruction of the underground level, through the replacement of windows and modernization of entrances, to the conservation renovation of the facade and the purchase of equipment and furnishings for theatrical production.
The total project cost is PLN 48,416,197.34, of which the European Funds co-financing amounts to PLN 31,253,243.10.
We are taking care of the Grand Theatre because it is not just a building – it is part of Lodz's identity and a place that will serve artists and audiences for decades to come.
The project is co-funded by the European Union and being implemented under measure FENX.07.01 Culture and Cultural Tourism Infrastructure, Priority FENX.07 Culture, as part of the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate, Environment Programme 2021–2027.
