One of Europe's Great Stages

data dodania:
13.03.2026
The main stage of Teatr Wielki in Łódź is one of the larger opera stages in Europe. It is 26 metres wide, and its depth, including the rear stage, reaches 39.5 metres. The total height of the stage space, from the understage to the technical ceiling, is 46 metres.
The stage is equipped with, among other features, a revolving platform 16 metres in diameter, 6 stage traps, 14 scenery wagons entering from the side pockets and rear stage, and over 50 electric and rope-operated fly bars. The lighting system comprises 600 fixtures powered by 450 dimmers, and the sound is provided by a digital audio system.

The scale of this technical infrastructure is reflected in the history of the building's construction. When the building was converted from a drama theatre to an opera house in the 1950s, the interior had to be thoroughly rebuilt. The 36 specialist screws needed to operate the stage's electro-screw drives were manufactured by the Naval Shipyard in Gdynia.

What will the FEnIKS project change?

As part of the project "“Adaptation and Modernisation of the Space of the Grand Theatre in Łódź, Including the Purchase of Equipment and Furnishings”, co-funded by European Funds, the main stage will undergo a significant modernisation. The flooring will be replaced, and both the main and chamber stages will receive modern LED lighting, a digital audio console, and a mobile sound reinforcement system. A surtitle screen will be installed above the stage – a solution used in leading European opera houses that makes performances more accessible to, among others, foreign-language audience members and tourists visiting Łódź.
