Giuseppe Verdi

Giuseppe Verdi, the composer of dozens of operas including hits like "La Traviata," "Aida," "Rigoletto," and "Il Trovatore," almost never ventured beyond the realm of opera composition. However, the death of the eminent Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni, a close friend of Verdi's, deeply moved the composer. In tribute to Manzoni, Verdi decided to honor his memory by composing the "Messa da Requiem" (the full title). Although rooted in Christian ideas and symbols, Verdi's work is not a typical funeral Mass in the liturgical sense. The composition emerged spontaneously as an expression of sorrow and grief over the loss of his friend—a grief so profound that Verdi could not bring himself to attend the poet's funeral. It is this deeply moving sentiment that gives the Requiem its intense emotional impact on the listener, with the sincerity of the emotions Verdi experienced during its creation resonating in every note played by the orchestra and sung by the choir.

We invite you to experience this beautiful piece on November 3, 2024, performed by soloists, choir, and orchestra of the Grand Theatre in Łódź under the baton of Rafał Janiak. As this date is so close to All Saints' Day, a time for contemplation and reflection on the passage of time and the meaning of life, let us remember, like Maestro Verdi himself, all our friends and loved ones who are no longer with us.

Brahms regarded Verdi's composition as a work of genius, so it is worth taking a moment to listen and immerse ourselves in reflection. You are cordially invited to join us!

On the wide stage is a large symphony orchestra. In the foreground you can see the conductor and several soloists, all dressed in evening gowns.
A close-up shot shows the orchestra’s cello and double bass sections, with the choir dressed in white shirts and blazers visible behind them. The musicians are focused on their instruments.
The grouped choir sings, holding open scores, with clear expressions of concentration on their faces. All are dressed in elegant evening wear, against a backdrop of blue and green abstract stage design.
The orchestra with choir and soloists performs on a stage, in the center of which stands the conductor with raised hands. Text is projected above the stage, and in the background is a large, abstract painting in shades of blue and green.
Two singers in dark, elegant dresses stand in front of music stands and sing. In the background are other musicians from the orchestra and members of the choir.
Two singers in elegant tuxedos and bow ties stand in front of the stands, singing. In the background, partly indistinct, you can see the choir and orchestra.
The conductor, dressed in a tuxedo with a white shirt and bow tie, stands with a baton in his right hand. His gaze is raised upward, an intense light falling on his face from the side.
The orchestra and choir with soloists perform on a stage, in the background of which is a large screen with a dark, architectural image. Above the stage are displayed subtitles, probably the lyrics of the songs being sung.
The detailed shot shows a choir singing, dressed mostly in black, and parts of an orchestra with various instruments. In the center, a musician playing kettledrums.
Two soloists in dark, elegant outfits stand in front of music stands, and next to them is a conductor with a raised baton. One of the women looks to the side.
The violin section in the orchestra, focused on playing, with the bows raised above the instruments. The musicians sit in dark costumes, illuminated by soft, theatrical lighting.
A view of the large stage, where the orchestra and choir surround a group of soloists, and behind them rises a monumental stage design reminiscent of an ancient gate. The whole is bathed in dark, theatrical lighting, with the audience partially visible in the foreground.
A large orchestra and choir stand on stage, bowing to the audience, with the conductor in the foreground and the soloists next to them. A large, circular symbol is visible in the background, and the audience at the bottom of the photo applauds the performers.
The auditorium is filled with an elegantly dressed audience facing an invisible stage. The ceiling is decorated with geometric, illuminated panels, creating a unique pattern.
Five people—three men in tuxedos and two women in elegant, dark dresses—stand side by side, posing for a photo, all smiling, against a backdrop of empty chairs and a dark stage.
