The Companhia Nacional de Bailado (National Ballet of Portugal) has the mission of providing a public service in the field of dance in Portugal, promoting citizens’ access to the experience this art through a diverse programme, while ensuring high standards of quality in the professional creation and production of dance at a national level.
Founded by the Portuguese State in 1977, the company operates within the framework of OPART — Organismo de Produção Artística (Organisation for Artistic Production), together with the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and the Estúdios Victor Córdon, and is based at the Teatro Camões in Lisbon.
Over nearly five decades, it has presented landmark works from the classical and contemporary ballet repertoire by international choreographers such as George Balanchine, Kurt Jooss, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, William Forsythe, Hans van Manen, Jiří Kylián, Mauro Bigonzetti, Ohad Naharin, Martha Graham, Hofesh Shechter, Alexander Ekman, Johan Inger, Sharon Eyal, Sol León and Paul Lightfoot, among many others.
At the same time, the company invests in commissions that generate a repertoire with a distinctive identity, notably through invitations to Portuguese creators such as Armando Jorge, Olga Roriz, Rui Lopes Graça, Vasco Wellenkamp, Fernando Duarte, Filipe Portugal and Miguel Ramalho, as well as to established choreographers working in the fields of dance and independent theatre, including Rui Horta, Paulo Ribeiro, Tiago Rodrigues, Victor Hugo Pontes, Tânia Carvalho, Clara Andermatt, Marco da Silva Ferreira and Sónia Baptista.
The relationship with different artistic disciplines has shaped many of these original creations, involving authors from music, cinema, literature and the visual arts in creative dialogues.
Given the versatility of its company members, the CNB is committed to diversifying its public offering through masterclasses, talks, publications, initiatives that bring dance closer to children and young audiences, and charitable dress rehearsals, live streaming performances thereby strengthening its commitment to disseminating the culture of dance, its history and appreciation.
Over the years, the company has successively been directed by Armando Jorge, Isabel Santa Rosa, Jorge Salavisa, Marc Jonkers, Mehmet Balkan, Vasco Wellenkamp, Luísa Taveira, Paulo Ribeiro, Sofia Campos and Carlos Prado.
In September 2024, the choreographer Fernando Duarte assumed the position of Artistic Director, becoming the first director to be appointed following an international public competition.
