XXVIII LODZ BALLET FESTIVAL
For the twenty-eighth time, we meet in Łódź to celebrate the Łódź Ballet Meetings. This biennial event, since its beginning, has attracted the atten- tion of the dance community and inspired great enthusiasm among audiences. As part of the festival, we present a variety of styles and aesthetics seen on European stages – from classical ballet to contemporary dance at its best. We do not focus on specific dramatic themes; instead, we offer a kaleido- scope of choreographic creations performed by outstanding guest artists.
Among this year’s invited companies, we will welcome for the first time Gauthier Dance//Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart and Companhia Nacional de Bailado from Lisbon. The German company has worked with some of the most important contemporary choreographers since its founding. In their performance “ELEMENTS”, we will see works by outstanding artists including Louise Lecavalier, Sharon Eyal, Andonis Foniadakis, and Mauro Bigonzetti.
Gauthier Dance will present two programs in Łódź. In addition to “ELEMENTS”, we will also see a new ballet by Akram Khan, well known to Polish audiences, who presented “Vertical Road” in Łódź several years ago. He returns to our festival with a new work, “Turning of Bones”. We are also pleased to welcome artists from the National Dance Company of Portugal with a performance by artistic director Fernando Duarte. They will present “Os Maias”, based on the novel by Eça de Queirós. This production, rich in classical dance technique, is an adaptation of a family saga set in the early 20th century.
After several years, English National Ballet returns to the festival with a two-part performance, “Masters in Motion”, choreographed by Crystal Pite and William Forsythe. In “Playlist (EP)”, the American choreographer playfully takes us into the world of pointe technique danced to pop music. This unusual combination, only seemingly a parody, has delighted audiences around the world.
In the second part of the evening, the company will present “Body and Soul (Part 1)” by Crystal Pite. This piece, which had its world premiere at the Paris Opera, is especially meaningful to us because it features fragments of music by Fryderyk Chopin. It is a melancholic journey into the depths of the body and soul, created by the Canadian choreographer.
Each edition of the festival includes a premiere by the Ballet of the Grand Theatre, and this year is no exception. “Supernova” is a two-part evening featuring a work by the outstanding artist Sharon Eyal, who created “Bedroom Folk”. This piece, originally premiered by Nederlands Dans Theater, is the result of the choreographer’s long collaboration with composer Ori Lichtik. The second part of the evening we will present my own work, “Echoes”, with music by Adam Walicki, who creates a world of harmony and sound that guides our dancers. I wish you many inspiring artistic experiences.
