The opera is performed in Italian, the original language version.
La Traviata, with a libretto by Francesco Piave based on Alexandre Dumas’s The Lady of the Camellias, was not received well during its first premiere at Teatro La Fenice in Venice in 1853. The bourgeois audience could not accept the fact that the plot of the opera is set in modern times and that the main character is a courtesan! History has proven that they were wrong: today, the opera is one of the most frequently performed ones. By composing La Traviata, Verdi gave opera literature a register of opera hits: Brindisi È strano, Di Provenza, Addio del passato, Gran Dio… Thereby, the soloists performing the title role received unlimited opportunities for vocal and acting displays.

La Traviata is one of the opera classics, and every opera theatre should have it in its repertoire because, unlike in the past, the story of Violetta and Alfredo, as well as Verdi's music, is adored by many. The Lodz audience certainly belongs to the ones that hold this Verdi work in high esteem and are in love with the story told.

Currently, the Grand Theatre in Lodz does not have this opera hit in its repertoire; the last performance took place in 2016. To complement the repertoire of our Theatre, we plan to premiere La Traviata on February 9, 2024. This will be the fifth production of this title in our Theatre, each of the previous ones was enthusiastically received by audiences, not only in Lodz. This time, the opera will be directed by Pia Partum. On stage, we will see the soloists, choir, ballet, and orchestra of the Grand Theatre in Lodz.
