Libretto:
Prince Edwin is in love with Sylvia, an artist at the "Orpheum" variety theater, who plans to go to America to achieve fame there. However, their departure is prevented when the lovers sign a document committing to marry each other. It turns out, though, that Edwin was engaged in his youth to another woman... Desperate, Sylvia decides to leave for America. Enter the Prince's "fiancée," Countess Anastasia, known as "Stasi." Stasi accompanies Edwin, while Sylvia appears with her supposed "husband," Boni. A mix-up of couples occurs. The old flames rekindle their love, but so do Boni and Stasi. Boni reveals Sylvia's false marriage. However, a problem arises regarding Sylvia's lineage, as she lacks any title. The artist outsmarts everyone by presenting a document certifying her engagement to Edwin, freeing him from his word, and leaves. Sylvia contemplates leaving the stage, but Boni dissuades her. Shortly after, Sylvia overhears Boni's staged phone conversation with Edwin, indicating that the Prince intends to commit suicide. Upon hearing this, Sylvia confesses her love to him. Edwin emerges from hiding and embraces her.
