He was the longest-serving director (1982-1991) of our theater, and what he accomplished is invaluable. The opera and ballet premieres staged during his tenure broke popularity records, bringing works that had never been seen in Łódź before to the stage, including "Żydówka" by Halevy, "Norma" by Bellini, "Fidelio" by Beethoven, and "Mefistofeles" by Boito, in remarkable productions. Ballet "revolutions" such as "Próba Fodora," "Faust goes rock," and "Republika rzecz publiczna" (both choreographed by Ewa Wycichowska) kept the mature audience awake at night and attracted the younger generation to the theater for repeat visits. Also, in Łódź, the audience had the opportunity to hear world-renowned vocalists, including Fedora Barbieri, Victoria de Los Angeles, Nicolai Gedda, and outstanding Poles Teresa Wojtaszek-Kubiak and Wiesław Ochman.

 

And what about the famous Łódź Opera Workshops known throughout Poland? On Sunday mornings, crowds of enthusiasts flocked to the theater eager to see "theater behind the scenes"; among them were Antonina Kawecka, Wanda Wermińska, Jerzy Waldorff, Wojciech Dzieduszycki, and Józef Kański. It is also worth mentioning the real "boom" of the Łódź Ballet Encounters and the numerous international tours of the ensemble with guest performances in Lyon and at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele in Messina.
