XXVIII LBF / OS MAIAS
In the first choreographic adaptation of The Maias, a seminal work of Portuguese literature, Fernando Duarte presents a ballet that breathes new life into narrative through dance, a form of expression widely cherished by audiences. This original work combines the dramatic intensity of Eça de Queirós’s universe with the unique expressiveness of choreography. Offering a contemporary exercise in intermediality, the piece evokes and reinterprets the novel’s distinctive characters and timeless themes through the lens of Queirós’s sharp irony. A blend of tradition and innovation, it projects dance as a language capable of storytelling and of moving audiences like few others can.
For this new production of The Maias, the musical score is performed by pianist António Rosado and soloists from the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra.
