Dramatic symphony/ballet. Premiere as part of the XXVII Łódź Ballet Festival. A production of the Paris National Opera. The work is being carried out in the original, French language version.
Creating the choreography for Romeo and Juliet (2007), Sasha Waltz turned to one of the most poignant love stories in world literature. The tale of star-crossed lovers, whose families are enemies, and whose deaths bring understanding and reconciliation, is one of Shakespeare's most famous works. This dark tragedy inspired Hector Berlioz to compose the dramatic symphony Romeo and Juliet for three soloists, two large choruses, and orchestra. During the world premiere in 2007, stars Aurélie Dupont and Hervé Moreau danced the lovers who found each other only in death. In the fall of 2012, the Romeo and Juliet production joined the repertoire of Milan's La Scala.

In April 2015, the premiere of Romeo and Juliet took place in Berlin as a co-production of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, La Scala in Milan, and Sasha Waltz & Guests. There, for the first time, the choreography was danced by the dancers of the Sasha Waltz & Guests ensemble.

Currently, Sasha Waltz is preparing this production with the ballet ensemble of the Grand Theatre in Łódź.

Two dancers perform on a bright stage, one in a light, flowing dress, the other in a long, flowing robe. A man sits in the background, and the stage is dark.
The photo shows a group of dancers on stage, several wearing elegant, flowing dresses in shades of brown and gold, while others are dressed in dark, form-fitting outfits.
On the stage, illuminated by bright lights, a group of dancers can be seen in dynamic poses. In the foreground, a dancer in a long black dress has one leg raised high, and other dancers, partly dressed in black, partly in beige, create a complex composition of their bodies.
In this photo, a large group of dancers on a white stage create a dynamic composition against a dark background. They are seen wearing both dark and light, flowing outfits, with their arms raised in the air, suggesting movement and expression.
On the stage, illuminated by bright lights, a woman in a long, shiny, light gray strapless dress is visible, with her arms spread wide and her mouth open, as if she were singing or delivering a dramatic line. The background is dark, and to the right, fragments of white, geometric forms are visible.
Against a black background, on a light blue stage, a ballerina in a dark, ornate tulle dress sits on her knees. Her back is exposed, and she bows her head, looking down with a contemplative expression.
In this image, a group of ballerinas in ornate gray tutus and corsets perform synchronously on a light blue stage, their bodies tilted forward, creating a dynamic and harmonious composition against a dark background.
On a two-tiered stage, against a black background, dancers in various costumes and poses are visible. On the upper tier, three people in dark costumes with their arms spread, and on the lower tier, a man in gray clothing with a raised hand, a ballerina in a light tutu, and a person lying on the floor.
The photo shows two dancers, a woman and a man, lying on the stage and kissing intensely. The woman is dressed in a light brown outfit and the man in a gray T-shirt, emphasizing the intimacy and focus on their gestures.
On a dark stage, lit with purple light, the dancer performs a dynamic pose, standing on one leg with his arms outstretched. He is dressed in black trousers and an unbuttoned jacket, revealing his torso.
On a white stage, lit with bright lights, there are three dancers in various poses. A man in a light outfit supports a leaning dancer in a white dress, while another man with a bare torso and a long black skirt stands next to them.
The photo shows a large group of dancers dressed in light, almost white costumes standing on a stage. On the left, four women in long dresses and tall, white headgear resembling hats or mitres stand facing forward. On the right, another group of dancers, also in light costumes and some with their faces covered, stand in a row, forming a long line on the stage.
On a dark stage, a bare-chested man in black trousers holds a woman in a white, flowing dress in his arms. In the background, a large group of people dressed in black, traditional clothing, including long coats and hats, form a solemn, standing audience.
On a bright stage, a large group of dancers dressed in light cream or white costumes are seen. Some are standing, others are kneeling around a person lying on the floor, creating a scene of care or support that gives the image a sense of drama and community.
On a wide, white stage, against a dark background, a scattered group of dancers perform expressive movements. Some lie on the floor, others bow, and one person in a dark, long skirt and no shirt stands centrally, with spread arms, dominating the stage.
