Stages of the Competition



STAGES OF THE COMPETITION


STAGE I: Composers who want to participate in the Stage I of the competition can register from the day of the competition announcement until 5 October 2016. Composers shall be asked to fill in a registration form available for download from www.operalodz.com/konkurs. All composers who have been registered by the Organizer shall be subsequently sent an excerpt of the libretto for which they should write the music. Until 5 December 2016, every registered composer can send a 10‑15 minute excerpt from the planed opera which should be written for soloists, mixed choir and symphonic orchestra for the libretto by Małgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk (which shall be sent by the Organizer) and must not be published and performed before. The jury will choose three finalists of the Opera Composition Competition until 20 December 2016.

STAGE II: The Composers chosen by the jury shall be invited by the General Manager of Lodz Grand Theatre, Paweł Gabara to cooperate in public performing the excerpts of the opera with the soloists, mixed choir and orchestra of Lodz Grand Theatre. The concert performance of opera excerpts shall take place in the first half of January 2017 on the stage of Lodz Grand Theatre. The performance shall be recorded and presented in the Internet and in «Manufaktura». Two composers shall be chosen through voting – also via Internet – (closed at midnight from 29 to 30 January 2017) by the jury and the audience (one shall be chosen by the jury and the other one shall be chosen by the audience). Those two composers shall move to Stage III of the competition. The official announcement of the results shall take place on Monday 30 January 2017 at 12.00. The composer who did not move to Stage III shall receive an award of PLN 5,000. Both composers qualified for the Stage III shall receive each an instalment of PLN 5,000 for composing the first act of the opera.

STAGE III: Two chosen composers shall have to compose the first act of the opera until 10 May 2017. The public performance of the first act in a concert version by soloists, mixed choir and orchestra of Lodz Grand Theatre shall take place on the stage of Lodz Grand Theatre in the middle of June 2017. The jury shall choose the Grand Prix Winner who shall receive a prize of PLN 30,000 (incl. the already paid instalment). The winner of the second prize shall receive PLN 15,000 (incl. the already paid instalment).

STAGE IV: The Grand Prix Winner shall have to compose the entire two-act opera and deliver full score, orchestra parts and piano score as well as music materials for soloists and for mixed choir to the Organizer until 30 November 2017. Under the contract, the Winner shall receive an additional fee of PLN 15,000. The world premiere shall take place on the big stage of Lodz Grand Theatre in November 2018 on the occasion of Izrael Poznański’s 185th birthday. In May or June 2019, the premiere of the open-air version shall be presented in «Manufaktura» in Lodz on the occasion of 15th anniversary of «Manufaktura».
